Roma is a glazed ceramic sculpture by Fausto Ferrara, realized in 2023, in which the void becomes a constitutive part of form.

A cut passes through the matter without dissolving its unity. It is not a surface decoration, but a threshold: it introduces depth, receives light and transforms the perception of the Work according to the observer’s position.

Geometry establishes a tension between mass and void, presence and absence, balance and discontinuity. The edge is not simply a separation: it defines a space within matter, making perceptible what would otherwise remain invisible.

In Roma, the reference to the city does not assume a figurative form. The Work does not represent Rome; rather, it retains an abstract and stratified memory of it, as if architecture had been reduced to the primary relationship between boundary, opening, matter and light.

The sculpture belongs to Ferrara’s research into Necessary Form, in which even at the scale of the object, form is not an autonomous image but the consequence of a relationship between matter, void and perception.
