Architectural Research & Patents
Fausto Ferrara's architectural research focuses on the development of innovative construction systems, continuous lattice and honeycomb structures, and advanced applications of auxetic geometries in the building sector.
Through European patents and theoretical-application studies, the research investigates new ways of producing building envelopes, with particular attention to material reduction, structural optimization, and the integration of form, material, and construction process.
Linear module for building
EP 3 892 786 A1
Summary text:
The European patent concerns a linear structural module for the construction of structural frames and kits for prefabricated buildings.
The system allows the construction of structural nodes using modular, assembleable elements, optimised for multi-storey buildings and frame structures.
Areas:
-
Modular construction
-
Structural nodes
-
Prefabricated frames
Summary text:
The patent introduces a continuous, jointless structural building envelope made using large-format 3D printing.
The shell:
-
integrates walls, floor and roof in a single element
-
uses high-performance materials (UHPFRC)
-
reduces mass and production waste
-
integrates insulation and protection in a single system
Key concepts:
-
Continuous structural shell
-
Reticular / honeycomb geometry
-
Additive manufacturing
Research on auxetic structures (Negative Poisson Ratio) investigates three-dimensional geometric configurations capable of increasing their structural density under stress.
X-Cell is placed in the field of three-dimensional retractable structures and foldable structures, with the aim of:
-
reduce the material used by up to 90%
-
significantly increase resistance compared to traditional sandwich panels
-
improve energy dissipation
-
allow greater formal freedom
The research explores the integration of auxetic and non-auxetic structural cells at the points of greatest load, generating high-performance hybrid systems.
Institutional Presentation
Institutional presentation at the Senate of the Italian Republic
Fausto Ferrara will present a talk on Italian villages, the anthropology of space, and the transformations of contemporary architecture. He will also present the Linear Module for Buildings patent and its applications in post-earthquake reconstruction.
The meeting was held in the presence of the Extraordinary Commissioner for Reconstruction after the 2016 Earthquake, Senator Guido Castelli.
